HYSTERIA is a lighthearted romantic comedy based on the surprising truth of how Dr. Mortimer Granville came up with the world’s first electro-mechanical vibrator. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy lead an accomplished cast in this untold tale of Victorian discovery, as a young doctor’s quest to work out the key to women’s happiness leads him to his own.

This film gave me the initial idea to delve into the topic of Hysteria. I went to see this film at The Chapter Arts Centre and found its underlaying concept fascinating. Although the film isn’t fully accurate, it explains the lighter side of Hysteria alongside a love story. This film also tells the story of  how the vibrator came into exsistance and how the idea of female pleasure and the female orgasm were born and learnt about.
