COMMISSIONS
Throughout history, it has been common for rulers and governments to commission public art as a means of demonstrating power and wealth, or even for specific propaganda purposes.Today, public artworks may be commissioned by benefactors who wish to donate the artwork to a course as a gift to the public.
During my second year at University, we were invited to undergo a commission for the newly built hospital, Cynon Valley Hospital, located in Mountain Ash, RCT.
The concept of a commission was completely new to me and my practice, in fact i was quite overwhelmed with the idea of making work for a development – rather than for myself.
The commission came with a brief that i had to keep to through all the stages of creating – so although it would essentially be my own work and ideas – the initial concept was mapped out from the start.
