CATHY DE MONCHAUX (1960)
” I don’t wake up in the morning and go: ‘Tra la, I’m an erotic artist. ” – Cathy de Monchaux
Cathy de Monchauxs sculptures have been the biggest inspiration for my series surrounding the subject of Hysteria. Monchauxs use of materials such as glass, paper, metal and leather have helped me experiment with different materials to my usual palett. In my opinion, Mondchauxs vaginal depictions are so compelling due to the combination of exceptional workmanship, the mysterious ideas behind the work alongside her use of pastel colours that make the dark themes bearable and somehow very feminine.
I find Monchauxs sculptures frequently juxtapose seductive soft elements, often with strongly sexual overtones, with harder materials, often spiky or in some way appearing to constrain the softer parts, resulting in work which is both sensual and threatening. By depicting both female and masculine attributes within these sculptures, i find beauty within the materials, the soft and supple materials arent over powered by the hard and cold metal apects, an aspect i was initially looking for with each series.
