Personal Statement

Passionate, Motivated and quirky art student, who is interested in developing my studies further in order to gain more in depth knowledge within the practice of art and the theory. I strive to create works, which execute my skills, alongside a body of work to show my concepts and understanding of the chosen topic. I am responsible and friendly, able to work individually or as part of a team, due to the work experience I have undergone over the last five years, including curating, exhibiting and working with community art opportunities.

Creative Work Experience

May 2011 – Co -Curator, The Factory, Porth
For an end of year show at Glamorgan university, I co curated an exhibition of art work created by the second year students of the BA (hons) Art Practice, for the public. My Duties included arranging and installing the work in a specific way to showcase the work to its best, alongside liaising with the factory to arrange dates for the exhibition to be opened. I was also responsible for the publicity side of the exhibition, entailing posters and flyers to inform the public of the show.

March 2012 – Commissioning opportunity, Cynon Valley Hospital, Mountain Ash

I was given the brief to create an art piece that was representative of bring the outside in, which if chosen would be placed within the family and waiting rooms of the hospital. I was given specific instructions as to the type of materials that were suitable, as the hospital environment has to be safe for its patient’s well being. From this I gained experience to work to an outside brief, making work for someone other than myself, as it challenged my own thought process. It also showed me how important the use of a deadline is to stand by, as it can have a fatal outcome if its not met.

Other Work Experience   

2008 – Present – Supervisor, Shoe Zone, Roath

Customer focused roll, in a busy shoe shop. Responsible for the opening and closing of the store, for setting and monitoring the sales of the store as well as setting customer service targets for my staff and myself. Dealing with customer inquiries and complaints in a professional manner. Duties include Cash handling and banking, talking phone calls and team messages, delivery, replenishment of the shop floor and general cleaning.

 

2012 – 2012 – Sales Assistant at NEXT, Leckwith

Responsible for customer enquiries and services, alongside pushing sales to reach weekly targets. Duties included, ordering stock from the Next Catalogue, Customer service, answering the phone and serving at the till point. My duties also included general tidying and cleaning to keep the store standers high.

2010 – 2011 – Sales Assistant at Claire’s Accessories, Cardiff

Customer service focused roll within predominantly young girls accessories shop. Responsibilities were to push sales throughout the customers visit as well as at the till point, to help reach an hourly sales target. My duties included serving customers, cash banking, dealing with customer enquiries, taking phone calls and team messages, controlling the stock replenishment levels alongside general tidying and cleaning of the store.

General and Transferable Skills   

I.T –  Computer Literate – Microsoft, Photoshop

Organization SkillsExcellent organizational skills which have developed throughout my education, alongside keeping two part time jobs with full time study. This has taught me to keep to time limits, in order to comply with deadlines I am set. Planning, organizing and team work where needed were crucial elements of producing a high standard of work, within my study.

Curating experience – The Factory, 2011 Exhibition gave me great experience in to the realm of curating. It taught me to maintain professional, even when things don’t go as planned, remaining calm and polite is critical when dealing with outside companies.

Managing people – Confident in managing and motivating individuals or a team to work creatively and professionally, with or without a time limit. I have gained the knowledge to help and support others around me with the experience I have throughout my work experience.

Influences and Interests

My influences includes; Hans Bellmer, Joel Peter Witkin, The Chapman Brothers and Kiki Smith – these artists have been a key element to the creation and development of my own art practice, throughout the last five years of my studies. I find myself being drawn to aspects of the female body within my work, from a vast range of perspectives, materials and media, such as photography, sculpture and installation.

My interests include learning new skills and techniques with a range of different materials. I find the exploration of a new material inspiring to my work, as it provides me with a new pathway.
