LIFE DRAWING

Life drawing is a drawing of the human figure from observation of a live model situated within the same space as yourself. Life drawing is arguably the most difficult subject an artist commonly encounters, it takes a lot of trial and error to produce an anatomically correct figure drawing. The human figure is one of the most enduring themes in the visual arts, and the human figure can be the basis of portraiture, illustration, sculpture, medical illustration, and other fields.

Life drawing however doesn’t solely consist of putting pen to paper, an artists interpretation of life drawing can be down to their own discretion and imagination. Personally, the idea of drawing the human figure doesn’t appeal to me, i have no passion for drawing or painting, although the human body holds the main focus of my practice, but through the use of sculpture, mixed media and photography.

Therefore, i decided to take my life drawing module in a slightly unorthodox way, i wanted to incorporate an aspect of photography to enable me to capture the smallest of detail that i couldn’t with my own hands, as i lack the enthusiasm that drawing gives other people.
The module title was ‘fragments’ so i decided to look at the two most important aspects of the human form. The face and hands. The two body parts allow us to connect with others in a varity of differing ways; friends, family, lovers.

They help us tell others how we are feeling without saying a word, and i find this aspect incredibly fascinating, a simple touch of the hand can hold a thousand meanings. So to incorporate a personal emotion within this module, i decided to use my boyfriend as my live model, i wanted to capture his emotion as the model and mine as the photographer.
