TRANSPOSITIONS
This was the starting point of my obsession with the female body. By taking different body parts and playing with their use and need. During a Risk workshop, we were split into new groups and got all of our objects on the floor, and had to randomly start joining things together. Our group decided to create the opposite of what are objects were, as we had a lot of household objects like you’d see on a mantle piece. we decided to make an uncomfortable set up of a mantle piece to represent “No Taste”. which included the decapitation of dolls wrapped in chain etc.

Reversal and Revolution – Newspeak, The New Quiz, Have I got news for you, What the papers say – In George Orwell’s 1984 the meanings of words are reversed so that Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth rewriting history and ends up in The Ministry of Love which is the HQ of Big Brother’s security service where citizens are tortured and ‘re-educated’. Real life equivalents of this were and are experienced under Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Kim Jong il or the Stassi in former GDR For this workshop we had to bring in a copy of a current magazine or newspaper and experiment with reversing, censoring and rearranging images and text from the newspaper on to the wall so that fiction becomes fact, male becomes female, left becomes right, liberal becomes conservative, big society charity becomes money, war becomes peace, ads become news, sex becomes sport, natural disasters become personal ads, crime becomes job vacancies
This notion of newspaper headings being blown up out of proportion was the base to this work.
By transposing these headlines and taking them to the extreme versions of near impossible stories, the concept becomes surreal and comical, rather than the serious nature they were intended to conceive..
