MEAT SERIES

The meaning of the Meat series is connected to the notion of Hysteria – a once diagnosed medical condition of the female sex. For the series i wanted to create work that asked and answered the question of hysteria with an overly blunt interpretation.

I wanted to create depictions of vagina’s as pieces of meat, hanging bluntly off a rusted nail. The idea came to me whilst visiting my local butchers – seeing the meat hanging from over-sized hooks on a wall, it looked fragile and maltreated – once a living being.

It was this concept i wanted to depict for this series of works, – over exaggerated vagina’s acting as meat – minus their original surrounding – the female body. Without their usual placement  of the female body, these works become sinister and slightly taboo – yet intriguing to view and touch.
