HYSTERICAL
The series titled, Hysterical discusses notions of hysteria in terms of the female body being locked up and left to fend for itself. I wanted to capture the emotion that certain females would of felt, when determined hysterical within the courts, they would be locked away until the suitable treatment was ready to be given. The actual body itself is not meant to be a replica of the female body – it is there to act as a representation for the body itself. The idea of using feminine materials came from researching Sarah Lucas and her Bunny series – where she incorporated the use of female tights and underwear. I found this a great inspiration for this series, as i was initially imagining casting the entire female body with plaster – would looking back now would of been near impossible with my resources.
